Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
