Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included details about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
