Congress Greenlights Bill to Make Public Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will force the release of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team gave in after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

“The American people have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Next Steps

This legislation next heads to Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and announced he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their supporters who were seated in a House gallery, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would make public personal information of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
